Having kids is a big step in life. From big decisions like the way you approach life to the mundane ones as to what should be prepared for dinner, all have to be taken considering the convenience and well-being of the child.
Top 10 Infant Care Books Every Parent Should Read
This is one state where every little advice can go a long way in helping you deal with everyday situations. Here are some books selected by our panel of experts that will help you in the journey of infant care
1) Parenting With Love and Logic by Foster Cline, MD, and Jim Fay
One of the most popular books on the topic, it is so well-loved for a reason. This book is all about raising self-confident children who are ready to face the real world, without getting angry, threatening or nagging. This book gives the parents a step by step approach for making each mistake of your child into a learning opportunity and helps to take proper infant care.
2) The Conscious Parent: Transforming Ourselves, Empowering Our Children by Shefali Tsabary, PhD
In the hustle-bustle of life, we often forget ourselves and carry a lot of pain and negativity hidden deep within. As parents, we unknowingly pass on this legacy to our children and then look for quick fixes. In this book, however, the author talks about ways for new parents to become more conscious of their inner feelings and then working towards a mutual understanding based relationship with their children, rather than the I-am-always-right attitude.
3) The Happiest Baby on the Block: The New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Baby Sleep Longer by Harvey Karp, MD
It is no secret that good sleep is very important for a newborn baby as it helps in their development. This book is a gift to expecting parents, where they can learn about a revolutionary way of making a baby fall asleep. This book helps you be prepared to welcome your child with a sound sleep right from day 1.
4) Bringing Up Bébé: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting by Pamela Druckerman
An interesting viewpoint from a former reporter Pamela Druckerman, who gave birth to her baby in Paris. She compares the surprisingly well behaved, non-fussy children and their relaxed new mother and ventures to find out what they do differently as compared to American mothers to bring about such a stark difference. A great alternative approach for all new parents to get the best for both them and their children.
5) The 10 Habits of Happy Mothers: Reclaiming Our Passion, Purpose, and Sanity by Meg Meeker, MD
Raising well mannered, happy and healthy children along with managing all the family and social expectations can take a toll on anyone, especially mothers, who are expected to keep it all together. In this book, Meg Meeker with her vast experience as a paediatrician proposes a practical approach for a new mother to take care of herself and her child in a much better way.
6) The New Father: A Dad’s Guide to the First Year by Armin A. Brott
While a new mother has a lot of guidance and advice still available to her, generally the new fathers are the ones at a loss. With this book, written with a slight touch of humour and giving all the information about their baby’s growth on a month by month basis, Armin A. Brott makes life much easier for the fathers.
7) The New Dad’s Survival Guide: Man-to-Man Advice for First-Time Fathers by Scott Mactavish
Next on the list is another one for the fathers, a humorous yet essential survival guide for the new fathers to help them demystify the whole phenomenon known as fatherhood. Written by a male author, looking at the situation from a man’s eye, this is the one book you must have as a new father.
8) Naptime Is the New Happy Hour: And Other Ways Toddlers Turn Your Life Upside Down by Stefanie Wilder-Taylor
Having managed to breeze through the first year, you realize a whole new world, where your toddler is now a rampaging whirlwind. This book is a practical and witty guide full of common sense on how to make this the best time for both of you by doing creative things like planning fun outings.
9) The Attachment Parenting Book: A Commonsense Guide to Understanding and Nurturing Your Child by Dr. William Sears and Martha Sears, R.N.
Forming a bond or an attachment with your baby on different things and helping them grow through this is the essence of this book, which focusses on the six “B”s of bringing up a healthy baby.
10) Toddler Tactics by Pinky McKay
Infant care can be anxious; caring for a toddler can be exhilarating and exhausting at once. This book contains some great practical advice on dealing with your growing bundle of joy who has decided to test your patience to the extreme!
