Uterine fibroids are very common among women of reproductive age. Usually, the fibroid is diagnosed during the first screening via ultrasound. 

But what happens if you discover fibroid during pregnancy? As per experts, they won’t cause any problem with the pregnancy. Some studies suggest that the chances of cesarean delivery increase. And some consider that it can lead to complications in the first three months of pregnancy.

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that grow from muscle tissue in the uterus. They vary from pea size to grapefruit size. It’s asymptomatic and affects about 70 percent of women. 

Fibroids are more common among women who are in the mid-age group,  overweight, or not on contraceptive pills. The types are intramural, submucosal, subserosal, cervical fibroids.

If a woman is pregnant fibroid can’t be removed as chances of bleeding increase. Hence women have to live with until delivery time.

The study suggests only 10-30 percent develops complications during pregnancy. The complications include are the large size fibroids that may restrict the growth of a fetus. 

If the placenta gets detached from the uterine wall because it’s blocked by a fibroid, known as Placental abruption. This reduces the supply of oxygen and nutrients.

Chances of the cesarean section increase six times. Chances for miscarriage increases and breech position can make vaginal delivery impossible.  Risk of preterm birth increases. 

What are the symptoms of fibroids if you are pregnant?

Symptoms would make you aware so that you can get timely treatment. 

It is very important that you stay aware of the signs and symptoms especially during pregnancy so that you do not confuse it to be something else. 

The size is more likely to increase during pregnancy that elevates the pain. Pain can be in the back, legs, abdomen while urinating. 

Increases the frequency of urine. Vaginal bleeding, or even miscarriages during early pregnancy. 

What are the symptoms of fibroids if you are not pregnant?

Usually, fibroids are asymptomatic. The most common symptoms are irregular periods, heavy or painful periods. Infertility, pain during intercourse, anemia, constipation, frequent urination, low back pain, etc.

What are the effects on fertility?

Many women conceived naturally even without treatment. In some cases, it can effects fertility. The fibroid that grows under the inner lining of the uterus known as submucosal increases the risk for infertility.

How are fibroids treated during and after pregnancy?

Treatment during pregnancy is limited. Only symptomatic treatment is advised. 

Treating before pregnancy is Myomectomy in which surgical removal of fibroids.

Hormonal birth control pills or contraceptive pills may relieve symptoms like pain or heavy bleeding during periods. Intrauterine device (IUD) can help reduce symptoms

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn-RH) medication blocks can help shrink fibroids. But you won’t get pregnant during this treatment. In Myolysis, the laser used to shrink it.
