Preeclampsia is among the most fatal pregnancy complications. It’s characterized by high blood pressure and may affect organs like liver and kidneys.

However, high blood pressure during pregnancy doesn’t confirm preeclampsia, it may be a sign of another problem. It occurs during the third trimester of pregnancy.

If left untreated, it may develop eclampsia and lead to fatal complications for both you and your baby.

The most effective treatment of Preeclampsia is the delivery of the baby. Post that all symptoms subside with treatment.

Symptoms of the Preeclampsia

In initial stages, it presents with no symptoms. However, the other signs include are:

  1. High Blood Pressure
  2. Increase in the level of protein in Urine
  3. Severe headaches.
  4. Blurred vision.
  5. Upper abdomen pain just below the ribs on the right side.
  6. Odema or swelling of the face, hands or feet.
  7. Decreased urine output
  8. Shortness of breath

Who is more at Risk?

Most cases of pre-eclampsia are mild and may have less or no effect on the pregnancy. Othe risk factors include:

  • First-time mom.
  • Family History of Preeclampsia.
  • Chronic hypertension.
  • Women of very young than 20 years or older than 40, as well as obese women, are at risk.
  • Woman with Multiple pregnancies.
  • History of previous health conditions like chronic high blood pressure, kidney disease, and, diabetes, etc

How to detect preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is detected during prenatal checkup via test like blood pressure, urine test.

How can preeclampsia affect the mother and baby?

Several complications of preeclampsia may include:

  • Affect on Baby: It can cause fetal growth restriction, low birth weight or preterm birth.
  • Affect on Mother: HELLP syndrome. It means hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count. The symptoms include nausea and vomiting, headache, and upper right abdominal pain. If left untreated leads to eclampsia as a results seizures can develop.
  • Organ damage. It may damage the organs like kidneys, liver, lung, heart, or eyes, and may cause a stroke or other brain injury.

Treatment and Prevention of preeclampsia

If you have mild preeclampsia your doctor will advise you for frequent prenatal checkups, complete bed rest.

Preeclampsia is not curable until delivery of the baby. So If you have severe preeclampsia your doctor may advice blood pressure medications, bed rest, dietary changes, etc.
