Diabetes and infections – are you at risk? #EnsureDiabetesCare

Diabetes is one of those diseases that completely changes one’s life. It leads to lifestyle modifications. And affects every aspect of what you do.

In diabetes, the body is either deficit of insulin. Or the insulin it produces doesn’t work properly. There are different forms of diabetes. Type 1 and Type 2.

90% of people suffer from Type 2 diabetes.[1]

This condition usually develops because of family history, age, weight, etc.

It starts in the later years of life and takes time to be diagnosed. My father diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2018.

He started getting symptoms. Like dizziness, loss of energy, and lethargy. He also started losing weight.

In six months, he lost around 6kgs of body weight. In the beginning, his blood glucose levels were uncontrolled. So, the doctor changed the medication.

Post the change, his blood sugar has been under control. But his weight keeps on reducing. Even though he takes a healthy diet. And incorporates exercise and meditation in his daily routine.

He is also regular with his medication as advised by the doctor. Nothing we’ve tried has helped out.

Diabetes and infections - are you at risk?

As a result, his immunity is weakening by the day. He easily falls victim to infections like the flu and this has us concerned.

Since diabetes has increased his chances of falling victim to various infections and related complications. There’s a need to improve his body’s immune system.

Are diabetic patients more at risk for infections?

Since diabetes is the kind of disease that weakens immunity and increases the risk of infection[2]. Over time it can cause serious health problems.

Whenever there is an infection, our body’s immune system alerts the white blood cells to take action. And protect the body from infections.

In the case of diabetes, the body’s immunity is compromised. Hence, white blood cells can’t always get to fight germs.

As a result, infections develop more quickly and frequently. Diabetic patients are also more likely to have health issues. Like nerve damage and slow-healing wounds.

This additionally increases the risk of infection and related complications.

Studies have also shown that diabetic patients face longer hospitalization[3].

What are the common infections associated with diabetes?

Even if the blood sugar levels are under control. Diabetic patients are at risk for infections.

  1. They are at an increased risk of developing flu complications[4]
  2. An increase in the level of sugar in urine can lead to bacterial growth. That further causes Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs).
  3. Diabetes causes nerve damage. It reduces blood flow. Hence slowing down the healing process.

How can diabetic patients avoid getting infections?

To avoid infections, proper management is needed. Medication, exercise, a healthy diet. And most importantly weight management. These are just a few things that need to be kept in mind.

  1. Takes medicines as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  2. Go for routine blood glucose level check-ups.
  3. Examine your foot daily. Practice hygienic foot care as poor footwear can lead to infections[5].
  4. Follow proper urinary hygiene practices.
  5. Exercise regularly
  6. Have a balanced and complete diet

Living with diabetes often causes feelings of guilt. The fluctuation in sugar levels can often leave a person feeling depressed.

My father also feels depressed sometimes. Because of long term medication and restriction on certain food items.

It’s very important how much you eat and what you eat. After consulting a dietitian, we now follow the healthy plate method.

According to this, half of the plate contains vegetables, 1/4th contains protein. And the other 1/4th contains carbohydrates.

Apart from this fruits and curds can be taken as a snack.

Post his gradual weight loss, when nothing else seemed to work. We started diabetes-specific nutritional supplements like Ensure Diabetes Care.
