Everything You Should Know About Placenta Previa

The baby develops inside the placenta during nine months of pregnancy. The placenta provides oxygen and nutrition to the baby. It’s connected via the umbilical cord and normally attached to the top or side of the uterus.

In placenta previa, the placenta lies low in the uterus. It partially or completely covers the cervix. It’s of three types: Complete, Partial and Marginal.

What is Low Lying Placenta?

In some cases, the placenta is attached to the lower region of the uterus close to the cervix in the early stages of pregnancy. As pregnancy progress, it moves towards the upper portion of the uterus.

However, when the placenta does not move upwards and remains in the lower region of the uterus by the third trimester, it results in the development of placenta previa.

Causes of Placenta Previa

Here are a few causes of placenta previa:

  • Women who are 35 years or older.
  • Multiple pregnancies.
  • Surgical history of the uterus.
  • The shape of the uterus is abnormal.
  • Smoking/drugs
  • History of miscarriages/abortions
  • Baby’s position: Breech or Transverse position of the baby increases the chances of placenta previa.
  • History of Dilation and Curettage (D&C)

Symptoms

It’s usually diagnosed with vaginal bleeding without pain during the second trimester of pregnancy. It can cause severe bleeding during pregnancy and delivery. It’s observed that more the placenta covers the cervix, the less likely it is to resolve. Baby is usually breech or transverse positions. It also involves premature contractions.

Complications

If you have placenta previa, the risk of these serious complications occurs. However, the incidence varies from person to person:

  • Bleeding: Severe bleeding may occur during labor, delivery, and post-delivery.
  • Preterm birth. Your healthcare provider may advise you emergency C-section delivery before your baby is full term.

Treatment of Placenta Previa:

The treatment differs from patient to patient. If placenta previa is diagnosed in the first trimester, it may even resolve on its own.

Your health care provider will restrict activities including intercourse, using tampons, traveling, pelvic examination. You are advised for bed rest and regular hospital checkups in case of light bleeding.

Blood transfusion is suggested in case of heavy bleeding. Medicines are given to prevent early labor and premature delivery.

If the bleeding is not controlled, emergency C-section delivery is advised. In case of marginal Previa vaginal delivery is possible, But incomplete or partial Previa C-section delivery is required.
