In a normal pregnancy, fertilized egg implants and growth in the uterus. In case of Ectopic pregnancy fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, such as the fallopian tubes, ovary, abdominal cavity or cervix.

The most common type of ectopic pregnancy occurs in fallopian tubes and is called a tubal pregnancy.
Cause of ectopic pregnancies
An ectopic pregnancy occurs because of when any damage or infection narrow the fallopian tube. This usually happens because of the following reasons:
- Infections like Pelvic inflammatory disease, Sexually-transmitted diseases.
- Hormonal imbalance
- Infertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF)
- Endometriosis
- Malfunction of the uterus or tube
- Previous History of ectopic pregnancy
- Unsuccessful tubal ligation
- Use of fertility drugs
- Smoking
Who is most at risk?
Any women can have an ectopic pregnancy, the risk is higher for women who are:
- Women older than 35
- History of ectopic pregnancy
- previous abdominal or fallopian surgeries
- PID
- Induced Abortion
- Undergoing infertility treatment
- Contraceptive methods like IUD, contraceptive pill
- Smoking
Signs and symptoms
Sharp abdominal pain with on and off the intensity and Light Vaginal bleeding is the most common symptoms of ectopic pregnancy.
How is Ectopic Pregnancy Treated
The treatment depends on the progress of the pregnancy and site of implantation. Some of the ways are:
Early ectopic pregnancy can be treated with the methotrexate injection given intramuscularly. This prevents or stop the growth of the embryo and discontinue the pregnancy.
Surgery in case of emergency when heavy bleeding occurs because of the ruptured fallopian tube. It is known as a laparotomy, and involve a larger incision.
Laparoscopy: It involves small incisions and removes the pregnancy tissue using the laparoscope.
Can I get pregnant again after an ectopic pregnancy?
If you have previous ectopic pregnancy there are chances to have in the future. Yes, you can have a healthy pregnancy depending on the condition of the fallopion tube.
