Hypothyroidism and Pregnancy: What Should I Know?

Thyroid hormone plays an important role during pregnancy. With proper care and treatment, women with thyroid problems can have a healthy pregnancy.

The fetus depends on the mother’s thyroid hormone in the first trimester of pregnancy, later on, it begins to produce it’s own.

Thyroid hormones regulate many body functions. When the body produces too little thyroid hormone, can slow down the body functions. It’s known as hypothyroidism.

What causes hypothyroidism in pregnancy?

It’s caused by chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland. In pregnancy, it’s diagnosed from existing and untreated hypothyroidism.

How does hypothyroidism affect the mother and baby?

Some of the same problems caused by hypothyroidism are:

Thyroid hormone plays an important role in baby brain development. Impair thyroid hormone especially during the first trimester can affect the baby’s growth and brain development.

Symptoms

A pregnant woman may feel extreme fatigue, cold intolerance, muscle cramps, constipation, and problems with memory or concentration.

Diagnosis

Like hypothyroidism by blood test TSH and T4 levels. High levels of TSH and normal free T4 confirm hypothyroidism in pregnancy.

Treatment of hypothyroidism during pregnancy

Woman with hypothyroidism during pregnancy is treated with synthetic thyroid hormone called thyroxine. To maintain normal thyroid function especially for the baby’s growth and brain development synthetic thyroxine is needed. It’s safe and necessary for the well-being of the fetus and mother.

  12. My mom has thyroid .hyper thyroid which gains weight .she has kept it in control ny maintaining a diet and exercising regularly .

  13. I am so unaware of such a situation. It sounds really dangerous during pregnency stage. DR. Bushra it would be really helpful if you can write about type 2 diabates before 40. Like what to eat, lifestyle etc.
