What should I expect on my first Antenatal care visit?

When patients come to me on the first antenatal care visit, I asked them many questions related to their health. Therefore, you can expect a thorough examination of your health by your gynecologist.

Usually, we start by asking the date of the first day of the last menstrual period. We use this date to calculate the EDD also known as Expected Delivery Date. That’s EDD is the day when your baby will be born.

Complete physical examination is carried out. Routine test including a Blood test, Urine test, HIV, VDRL (Test for sexually transmitted diseases), Ultrasound is performed.

You should talk about the prescription of drugs if you’re taking previously with your consultant whether it will affect your pregnancy or not.

What are things I can do to maintain health during pregnancy?

Pregnancy comes with lots of responsibilities towards your baby and yourself. Special care should be taken to ensure your health. Taking well-balanced Diet, light Exercises as advised by your physician, and don’t take stress during this period.

Apart from this intake of drugs if you’re addicted to smoking, tobacco, alcohol etc. Should be completely cut off. As this can harm your baby in many ways.

  1. A good diet is so important for a healthy pregnancy… back home, many women don’t get antenatal care because of which they have iron deficiency and complications. This is a great article.

  2. Nowadays… all pregnancies in educated families are closely monitored from Day 1. In my town (Jaipur), they even have free antenatal care in government hospitals for the weaker sections. My old maid, when she got pregnant, got herself registered there, and was given an ID card. She was given a complete schedule of regular checkups, supplements etc.

  3. I don’t know much, but I have read a few places that Antenatal care is indeed important.
    Another extremely important post! I think by the end of it, I might have much more information about pregnancy than my future wife :p
