Abortion is one of the less discussed topics among women in India. Out of shame, lack of confidence the woman doesn’t discuss the pain they went during abortion with fellow woman.

What’s the Need of Discussion regarding Abortion?

The hesitation sometimes takes them to unsafe methods of termination of pregnancy. The taboo about abortion make it abnormal topic of discussion. People will judge you, questions you, and many other issues of Indian society.

Discussing about abortion with fellow woman especially with their growing daughter is much needed. It will not only impart realistic experience, knowledge and right way to do it.

Abortion is one of the sensitive topics to talk. However, correct information from closed ones experiences let’s not us fall prey to misinformation from unreliable sources. The awareness would help us to take informed decisions in the future.

Women should not only inform others also help them learn to be comfortable in their skin. And not let others take decisions on behalf of her health and body. This will empower them and help them to be the healthier version of themselves.

What is the new Abortion Law in India?

In Jan 2020, the amendment in Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act takes place. This act allows women to ask for abortion as per their reproductive rights and gender justice. This amendment brings India among top countries where women can make individual choices as per their need.

The new law allows women to access safe and legal abortion practices.

The upper limit of Medical Termination of Pregnancy increased from 20 to 24 weeks for women. This includes rape survivors, victims of incest, other suffered women like differently abled women and minors.

On the basis of opinion of one doctor, this law allows MTP until 20 weeks

Married women can undergo MTP for up to 20 weeks in the case of failure of contraceptive method.

The act allows unmarried women to terminate a pregnancy.

In case of fetal abnormalities the MTP can be done after 24 weeks as per the decision of Medical Board constitute of comprising a gynaecologist, paediatrician, radiologist/sonologist etc.

It is illegal to disclose the identity of the women who undergoes MTP by a medical practitioner to unauthorized people. The violation is punishable with 1 year imprisonment or a fine, or both.
The word “husband” is replaced by “partner” in the Bill. This finally acknowledges the consensual relationships outside of matrimony.

Abortion is legal in India and trained medical practitioner should perform them. Anyone above the age of 18 years up to 20 weeks of pregnancy can get abortion done in any registered clinic or hospital.

Last but not the list anything related to abortion or other health issues should be discussed with doctor before taking any decisions. Also taking abortions pills from nearest medical store is illegal. It can be injurious to your health if taken without doctors prescription.

How Get an Abortion In India?

So here we are taking about Induced abortion or abortion which one has asked for. It is not the miscarriage or spontaneous abortions.

What are the methods of getting Abortion?

  1. Medical Pills: It is the safe and effective method of abortion. Provided it’s done within 42 days of your pregnancy counting from first day of your last menstrual period. However it has to be taken exactly the way it is prescribed. It’s time taking process. And your doctor will discuss with you everything in detailed.
  2. Surgical abortion: It’s short procedure that involves hospitalization for few hours, anesthesia and antibiotics. It also involves use of instruments that is inserted inside your uterus for cleaning the womb under sterile conditions.
  3. Abortion like normal delivery or labour: It is done in case when pregnancy goes beyond 12 weeks. It involves admission for few days in hospital. And removal of womb via mini delivery or labour.

Do I have to take consent from family for abortion?

If you are below 18 years you need your parent consent. Above 18 years you don’t need anyone consent.

Is abortion is safe?

Yes it is absolutely safe provided it is done at the right place, with the right person and is done at the right time.

Is the abortion painful?

Yes, it does involve some amount of pain whether it is a medical abortion or surgical abortion. Sometime pain can be a little more than your period’s cramps. It can be easily counter by pain killers.

What are the Side effects of abortion pills?

Yes, side effects like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. Also bleeding can be heavy. And one should not take any medicine to stop the bleeding or reduce the bleeding.

Can I get pregnant if I abort my first pregnancy?

Yes, you can. Also abortion done with right procedure doesn’t affect your fertility. Multiple abortions however can have some side effects.

What are the precautions I’ve to take after abortion?

  1. Take care for the first 48 hours.
  2. Avoid alcohol and smoking as it may interact with medicine work.
  3. Avoid intercourse for a couple of weeks.
  4. In the case of a negative blood group, ANTI D injection should be taken within 72 hours of the procedure.
