Suicide news makes big or small newspaper headlines almost every day. Especially women who killed themselves out of various underlined reasons. In India, 10 women kill themselves every hour. Suicide is the leading cause of death among women in india.
As per the Lancet report, 2 out of 5 women who attempt to suicide are Indian. Also most of them are married, and below the age of 35 years.
Why are Indian women killing themselves?
There are several reasons that lead women to attempt suicide. According to National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB) data 2018 women kill themselves for various reasons.
- Marriage related issues like dowry related issues, extra marital affairs, divorce and others.
- Some women who are struggling with infertility and not able to produce child end up their lives by killing themselves.
- Family problems.
- Illness.
- Others causes like rape, eve teasing etc.
In Indian society, parents’ responsibility gets over after daughters marriages. So women are left with two choices either suffer in silence of seek legal help. The latter case is very rare. Especially if woman have children, dependant on husband financially, fear of social taboo, lack of support from parents push them to suicide.
