Supplements with proposed benefits for PCOS

Many supplements exists on the market with proposed benefits for women with PCOS,  though there is little research to support these claims.⁣

But there are handful of which that may have some value, like;⁣

🔹️INOSITOL ⁣

There are few different types of inositol but one form myo inositol seems to be particularly effective in treating some of the symptoms of PCOS.  It helps to regulate a number of hormones and also act as an insulin sensitizer. This is similar to the action of drug Metformin – often used in the treatment of PCOS,  but without the side effects.  The correct dosage that should be given must be in the range of 2 – 4 g /day   this appears to improve fertility by follicular maturation and improved ovulation and  improves insulin sensitivity .⁣

🔹️Vitamin D⁣

Vitamin D deficiency had been associated with insulin resistance in women with PCOS . Upto 85% of women with PCOS are deficient in vit D. Vitamin D deficiency is defined by a blood level of 25 ( OH ) D less than 20 ng /ml3. Treatment with Vit D supplements is recommended alongside food rich in vitamin D which are,⁣

Fish(salmon,tuna) , mushrooms and eggs.⁣

⁣🔹️FOLATE⁣

Folate supplementation may reduce inflammation and blood markers associated with long term risk of cardiovascular disease in women with PCOS.  However the most important thing to remember is if are trying to conceive you should be taking foluc acid supplement until the 12th week of pregnancy. ⁣

🔹️CINNAMON ⁣

Cinnamon supplements (1.5 gms /day) have been shown to improve menstrual irregularity +insulin resistance in women with PCOS , another alternative would be to add 1 to 2 teaspoons of cinnamon in your diet per day.⁣
