3 ways in which you can celebrate festivities as a caregiver to a diabetic #EnsureDiabetesCare

Indians love to celebrate festivals in grand ways. Diwali is one of the most popularly celebrated festivals in India. It’s a wonderful time when the family comes together to celebrate.

It is the time to prosper, eat amazing foods, and share happiness with near and dear ones.

As glorious and beautiful as it may sound, the festive seasons can be challenging for some. Especially for those who have ailments like diabetes.

Whether you are diabetic or a caregiver, it is possible you find it difficult to keep the patient’s health on track.

During festivities, our lifestyle, especially our eating patterns, change. Lip-smacking recipes are cooked, and no-one can resist it. Hence, managing diabetes during festivals in India requires more attention.

As the festive season is approaching, it’s important to ensure that diabetic individuals are safeguarded from the potential risks that come with the celebration of festivals.

Last month my whole family attended a cousin’s wedding and naturally, our routine went for a toss.

My father is diabetic, and we had to keep an eye on what he was eating to ensure his blood sugar levels were maintained.

Managing Diabetes during Festivals in India

To manage diabetes during festivals in India, apart from precautions, some healthy tips should be followed.

Here, I’m sharing 3 ways in which you can celebrate festivities as a caregiver to a diabetic.

1. Make better nutritional choices

During Diwali, lots of sweets are prepared at home. Festive dishes are usually heavy and oily. In such a case it is very normal for even healthy individuals to put on some weight and indulge in binge eating.

For a diabetic, however, it becomes crucial to watch what they put in their system. They can’t eat everything and anything that’s cooked at home.

Usually, I try to convince my father to eat light. It’s important to opt for food that adds nutritional value. Apart from meals, I offer him fruits and dry fruits.

The diet for diabetics is conceptualized from clinical research, portion control, and lifestyle changes[1]. And to meet the nutritional needs on the go, the physician suggested Ensure Diabetes Care by Abbott since it is a diabetes-specific nutritional supplement.

This supplement starts working from day 1 and helps control your blood sugar levels in 4 weeks.

Studies too say that supplements have shown promising results in diabetes treatments[2]. After regular use, my father’s blood sugar level is controlled. It keeps him full and energized throughout the day.

Healthy eating patterns, nutrient-rich food, and portion control help in maintaining body weight goals, control blood sugar levels and delay complications of diabetes[3].

I always make sure that my father’s eating routine is on track. Portion control and timely eating is a must.

Irregular eating patterns affect his digestion and metabolism so I try to serve him food on time and guide him to avoid overeating.

2. Ensure you take your meds on time

During festivities, I always make sure that my father’s medication is on track. People who take medicine on time are at low risk for poorly controlled glucose level[4].

Timely medicine is always my priority no matter how busy I’m in my work.

c. Exercise and don’t forget to have fun

According to experts, exercise is important to manage weight. Exercise also helps to improve insulin sensitivity[5].

Hence, moderate exercise like walking for 30 minutes a day is advised.

Usually, it’s not possible to follow a proper exercise routine during festivals. We tend to become lax. I always try to make sure that my father does some light exercise and doesn’t skip his morning walks.

Last but not least is to have fun! It is time to celebrate after all and having a diabetic at home, or being a caregiver to one should not mean you cannot have fun.

As a caregiver, I do my bit to ensure that my father’s blood sugar levels are controlled by taking certain precautions.

Whether you are a diabetic yourself or a caregiver, these tips would help you to celebrate the festive season happily and healthily.

Spend time together and do things that you otherwise cannot do because of the busy daily routine.

Wishing you and your family a Happy Diwali.
