Jewels of Ramadan – Pregnancy and Fasting during Ramadan

Pregnancy and Fasting during Ramadan

Absolutely it’s a matter of faith and fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. But if you are pregnant and fasting during Ramadan then you are putting your baby health at risk.

Whether you should fast or not during Ramadan? This is one of the most common questions pregnant women asked a lot. And as a healthcare advisor, I thought to sum it up in this article.

Pregnant women are exempt from fasting if their health is at risk.

All pregnant women please do not fast without consulting your doctor.

Keep in mind the hours of fasting matter a lot along with weather, hot and humid weather is again not suitable for fasting.

Your doctor will assess if you have any underlying obstetrical or medical history.

Especially if you are a true diabetic or having gestational diabetes, a true hypertensive or pregnancy-induced hypertension, preeclampsia, anemia any autoimmune disease, or any other chronic diseases like kidney or heart you would not be allowed to fast.

Those women with less liquor volume are also not allowed
Your nutritional status and BMI play a big role in it is below normal then also you are not allowed.

If you still fast without your doctor’s advice you and your baby both will have adverse effects, so please do not go against your doctor’s advice.

In Islam too you are given exemption and asked to complete the fasts when you are not pregnant or lactating.

One study done in England compared the weights of babies of mothers who were fasting to those who were not fasting.

The relative risk of reduced weight of their babies was 1.5 times more in women who were fasting.

Fasting and Nursing mothers: Nursing mothers are exempted from Allah to fast especially if the newborn is under 6 months old as she is his sole mode of feeding.
