Shaheen Bagh Protest Reflects the Irony Of Woman

In India, women are mostly grounded and never taken into account. They are 24*7 working to make the life of their loved one comfortable. Yet their identity remains unrecognized and categorized as weak, not having an opinion and not taking a stand for themselves. The 1-month-old protest going on Shaheen Bagh, New Delhi has proven the irony of Indian Women.

I’ve never thought about writing an article for #CAA_NRC_Protests. But defamation plotted against Women at #ShaheenBagh shaken me up. Are we really living in Modern India where a woman can be thrashed down so easily for speaking up? NO

How did Shaheen Bagh’s protest start?

The cruelty was done to unarmed students of the Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI), New Delhi for a peaceful protest march against the CAA(Citizenship Amendment Act) that was passed in both houses of Parliament on 11 December 2019, triggered the Shaheen Bagh protest.

Women at Shaheen Bagh standing solidarity with students to oppose the CAA(Citizenship Amendment Act), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR), led by the BJP government.

It evolves with 10-15 local women and later more people joined in and it becomes a 24/7 sit-in protest. It has now become the longest sit-in protest of modern India.

For the past 1 month, numerous protestors come together, most of them wear hijab and burqa-clad Muslim women include 80+ years old to young women, housewives, working, and students.

They are protesting against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) that will grant Indian citizenship to “persecuted” minorities – Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians – from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan – excludes Muslims.

बोल कि लब आज़ाद हैं तेरे, बोल ज़बाँ अब तक तेरी है,

तेरा सुत्वाँ जिस्म है तेरा, बोल कि जाँ अब तक तेरी है.

Bilquis, 82 who never protested, has been staying strong in the protest for 1 month. According to her, “she’s protesting against this new CAA law that the Modi government has passed. It’s against Muslims and will send our children to detentions camps” as told to Al Jazeera. She eats, prays and sleeps here only and goes home for a bath, etc.

Even the chilly winter hasn’t deterred them. The women wrapped themselves in quilts and drunk cups of tea to keep warm.

“This protest doesn’t belong to Muslims only

but to all those people who believe in

the Indian constitution and want to protect it,”

“(The CAA) is against Muslims,” said 24-year-old Nazma, who comes with her two-year-old daughter Isra to the protest. “My daughter wants freedom. If we are not free, then my daughter also won’t be free.”

“They tried to stifle the voices of our children. So, as mothers, we decided to stand up.” Nisa(protestor) told CNN

“This will continue till Modiji does not repeal the Act,” said the second woman protester. As told to NDTV India.

“I am ready to die for this. If they roll back the bill, we will leave.” Noor said.

“We are fighting for our children,” said the 70-year-old.

Supports from Across India

Many liberals have joined the Shaheen Bagh anti-CAA protests in solidarity. According to them, the law is against the fabric of the Indian Constitution, which is giving citizenship on the basis of religion.

One of the first actors to speak against CAA Sushant Singh Rajput. The actor allegedly lost his show ‘Savdhaan India’ because he took a stand.

Swara Bhaskar gives a speech Against#NRC and #CAA and telling what the actual reason behind this law. Bhasker visited the protest site after addressing the gathering at Jamia Millia Islamia.

Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub spent the New Year’s night with the protestors at Shaheen Bagh.

Kanhaiya Kumar visited Shaheen Bagh “अब सिर्फ दिल्ली में शाहीन बाग नहीं है, पूरा हिन्दुस्तान एक बाग है और आप सब शाहीन हैं।” The chants of “Azadi” makes everyone emotional.

Mani Shankar Aiyar visited Shaheen Bagh “I am ready to do whatever I can do for all of you. I am making a promise. Whatever support you need from me in a personal capacity, I am ready to provide,” he said.

Later people from all walks, irrespective of caste, creed, and opinions, come forward and show solidarity with the protests.

Celebration of Culture

The area is enriched with artwork & posters with slogans.

Reject CAA, Reject NRC.

“Strength through unity, unity through faith”

Protesters at Shaheen Bagh chanted the Bhajan, paath, reading of Quran, Bible & Bhagavad Gita

Recently a 40 feet high iron welded structure in the shape of India’s map with the slogan “We the people of India reject CAA-NPR-NRC” has been installed.

Everyday round there are speeches, poetry, lectures.

Recently around 500+ farmers from Punjab visited here to stand in solidarity. The langer has been started by them for supporting the women of Shaheen Bagh protest.

The permanent langer started at shaheen bagh

They laugh, cry and are angry.

They are small, young and old.

They are housewives, working and students.

They sing, chants and are vocal.

They pray, eat and sleep.

They are humans of India.

They aren’t afraid of being judged & defamation.

They think from the heart

They are setting high standards for the women of the world.

They are fighting for saving the constitution of India

They are fighting for saving their identity

Calling them weak shows up your insecurity

They are the leaders and not followers

Brace up as it’s just the beginning of a new high.

There are no Setbacks

A petition was filed against the roads that have been closed in Shaheen Bagh protests. Delhi’s High Court dismissed the petition and told the police to handle it themselves.

BJP IT cell head tweeted a video claiming that Shaheen Bagh protesters paid Rs 500. Later the person who enacted in the video discloses that he was paid 5000 to act the video. But this doesn’t affect the protestors.
