Why There is Need for Sustainable Food Practices

As the growth and development progress risk on Environment addon. Does this automatically raise the question will our future generation able to avail of the natural resources or not? The answer is no.

Due to the increase in modern techniques, vanish off the basic environment-friendly methods. To prevent this, there is a need for Sustainable Food Practices.

Need for food consumption increase due to drastic population growth. This led the Food Industry to do adultered Practices like the use of Poisonous pesticides and fertilizers in order to maximize yield.

The chemicals etc used for crops or animals are neither good for them nor human beings. Once I heard the farmer discussing “Sow particular variety that produces more seeds”

We humans don’t have time to sit back and evaluate this whole algorithm. And moreover, now many companies comes with Food purifier. Now you and I are already consuming food loaded with chemicals.

This indirectly and directly affects our health and lead to hazardous diseases. Question is what We can do to ensure the Sustainability in Food?

What is Sustainable Food?

Sustainability is basically finding ways of providing food that will last for future generations and have minimal effect on the environment. To achieve this goal, Locally available food should be used.

This will cut down the production, transportation costs. This will gives a good deal to farmers in developing country like India. And Reduces the food waste and no one will sleep hungry.

Did you Know  Food thrown away by the Developed Countries could feed the world three times over.

Key features of Sustainability:

  • Satisfy food needs.
  • Conserves the Natural Resources.
  • Efficient Use of Nonrenewable resources.
  • Reduces the chances of Health Ailments cause by Chemical rich food.
  • Makes Farmer’s life and work valuable.

One of the major risks of Sustainability is Water. Research shows that 1 billion people in the world don’t have Safe Drinking water. What can you do? Try to use as much Tap water instead Branded water bottle. Even many Hotels and Restaurants eliminated Bottled water from Menu.

5 Ways for Sustainable Food Practices:

1) Switch to Plant Diet:

Prioritizing the Plant diet leads to afforestation, reduce freshwater withdrawals and Increase work for farmers. Means it’s win-win for both Human and Environment.

2) Look local:

Many farmers use natural methods of farming which ensure less destruction to environment, healthy food and restores tastes. Locally grown food is produced stores more health value than longtime harvested food. They hold more starch value and low on flavors and nutrients.

3) Go for Seasonal Produce:

There are many foods which are now available out of season. Try to consume seasonable food only. Which is good for your health and environment.

Consume only certified products that are grown organically. As they are produced with minimal use of chemicals which makes them safe for health.

  1. Home garden has been something I have been toying around, in my mind with. Lets hope I do something about it 🙂

  2. I really liked your article and you had given wonderful advice for sustainable food practices, I love the idea of using organic foods, in fact i always prefer to buy organic foods to minimize the exposure of harmful chemicals. #superbloggerchallenge2018

  3. You said it right Bushra, it is best if we groe our own food and many of us already doing that to some extent. But problem is we all share the same soil. The chemicals used by others ultimately reach us directly or indirectly. Change can occur if all decide to do something. But it’s difficult because people are either leaving farming or adopting the easy methods. Who wants to sweat out in fields??? Everyone dreams of a comfortable life in cities and depend upon what is being served to them whether healthy or chemical loaded!

  4. You have given some very valuable tips. You know I have never lived in a house that has a garden. The idea of a home garden where I can grow my own vegetables and fruits is particularly appealing to me. You are right about eating seasonable foods. That too helps. #Superbloggerchallenge2018 #Instacuppa

  5. I think looking Local is losing its charm with the entries of the superfoods and imported veggies that are available aplenty in all the super and hyper markets. And home garden is slowly becoming quite famous here in chennai now. Hope the change is positive!

  6. Hi Dr. Bushra! You have touched upon a pertinent topics and given some very practical tips. I loved reading this..I found the plant diet challenging even though I know its the way for the future. Please do read my Week 3 post for the #SuperBloggerChallenge2018

  7. These are some great points. There was a reason why our older generation considered food as god! Reducing wastage, and going local will go a long way in sustainable environment.

  8. Growing our own produce for the essentials is a really great idea. I eould love to do that for myself and my neighbours.

  9. I didn’t knew about Sustainable food practices. Thanks for the info. I love the idea of home gardening and I tried growing methi ,mint and corriander leaves at home. Only concern about organic produce is that it is expensive to buy.

  10. High time we look around for sustainable practices. Am planning to have a home garden soon. Will start slow, learn the process and hopefully get better at it. Nothing like growing your veggies and eating them too!

  11. All these are really valid points. But my fav that I follow is going local. I never look for fruits or vegetable that are not local or off-season. Our bodies are build in such a way that they get maximum benefits from local food and that’s why imported fruits/veggies don’t help.

  12. Informative article , I do try to buy organic ones and the idea of kitchen garden is the Best . Buying Local food is again a good habit 🙂

  13. Home garden is the best option of sustainability in the kitchen only if the space allows. Going totally organic is a little difficult but possible. #SuperBloggerChallenge2018 #Instacuppa

  14. Switching to home garden is the best way to start being sustainable. It would be just the first step towards sustainability. Nice blog post #SuperBloggerChallenge2018 #Instacuppa

  15. Due to lack of space, home garden is a dust ant dream. But I really love the idea.
    This post is highly relevant.

  16. I strongly support your thoughts and ideas. Sustainability in terms of food is must. One should support and encourage the local food items usage. Moreover, buying local food you develop a bond with that place and indirectly strengthen their faith in you.
    Great post.

  17. Loved the article Dr Bushra. Its so much the need of the hour. We are depleting resources for generations and on one hand we are wasting and on the other side people are dying for it

  18. Going local is definitely the need for the hour. I loved the idea about house gardens. My dad maintains a small kitchen garden which is sufficient for my parents. They hardly have to buy any veggies from outside untill they are going to have guest.

  19. Conservation and Sustainable practices will soon not be a choice but will become a way of life. The sooner people realize this it’s the better. You have shown a good path for people who are about to just start.

  20. I agree that in today’s time nothing is unadulterated. Farmers use chemicals and pesticides. Sustainable food is a good way but I don’t think all the farmers or people will adopt it. World is going to end with the destruction of nature, that’s a certain thing now. And the sad part is no one gives damn about that.

  21. For every health conscious person, this blog post is a must check Got to know the need to preserve the quality of the food items plus the need to prefer organic food too. Great work

  22. This was a topic I really wanted to write on but didnt know enough about… thanks for making it clearer for me 🙂

  23. Definitely very useful. I somehow know that I might not be the best person to have a kitchen garden. But I make sure that I use the products of the local farmers. Very informative! 🙂

  24. We have become so busy in our lives that we don’t think about what is good for our health and future, we just buy the stuff which are available and consume. Thanks for letting us know about the bad practices & its effects and the ways of sustainable food practices.

  25. live your idea of kitchen garden i’m so going to try that. sustainable food and resources should be taught to younger generation so that they could carry on what we are initiating.

  26. Indeed nothing can beat having your own Kitchen garden but its not possible for many because of space or time constraints. The least we can do is buy organic food and keep ourselves safe from those harmful pesticides. Thanks for sharing these ideas 🙂

  27. Oh yes, the best feeling is when you grow vegetables in your home garden and get the yield. #superbloggerchallenge2018 #instacuppa

  28. I certainly agree with your points of having a home garden and buying from local farmers.
But, I am bit hesistant about trying organic food. Every xyz is selling organic nowadays which is even costlier and has no surety of being truly organic produce!

  29. Sustainable food is healthy and tastes delicious too! Seriously it is a wonderful article. Thanks for sharing this informative piece.

  30. Glad to see supplements by GNC. I need to try these as I understand our diets are not balanced and we need to fill the gap.
