6 Things You Should Know about Infertility

In this series of Infertility, I’ve focused on all aspects of Infertility. It’s types of causes in the male & female. Various Test performed, fertility Treatment & their Advantages/disadvantages on couples.

Here I tried to talk about all the confusions and the right time to consult, how Infertility counseling help. So let’s brush up our knowledge about Infertility. Hope this article will be a ray of hope for Couples!!

What is Infertility?

Infertility is defined as a failure to conceive within one or more years of regularly unprotected coitus. There are basically two types :

  • Primary denotes those patients who have never conceived.
  • Secondary indicates previous pregnancy but failure to get pregnant subsequently.

Incidence of Infertility

  • 80 percent of the couples achieve conception if they so desire, within 1 year of having intercourse regularly with frequency (5-6times a week).
  • Next 10 percent will achieve the objective by the end of 2nd year
  • left 10 percent will remain infertile by the end of 2nd year.

Causes of Infertility

  • Conception depends on the fertility potential of both the male and female partner.
  • The male is directly responsible for about 30-40 percent.
  • The female is directly responsible for about 40-55 percent.
  • And Both are responsible for about 10 percent of cases.
  • The remaining 10 percent is unexplained.

Infertility in women

Ovulation is vital to pregnancy, and without the ovulation egg, there will be nothing for the male sperm to combine with. Failure to ovulate for whatever reason is one of the most common causes and can occur as a result of a number of conditions:

  • Irregular Menstrual cycle
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome also is known as PCOS
In this condition, hormonal imbalance inhibits the ovaries from ovulation (producing an egg)
  • Early menopause
Woman suffer from menopausal problems or MC stops at the age of 40.
  • Thyroid problems
Imbalance of thyroid hormone prevents ovulation.
  • Cushings syndrome
This is also a hormonal disease that can also stop ovaries from releasing an egg or ovulation.

Male infertility

For men, the most common cause is abnormal semen, accounting for 75% of all cases. A number of explanations for abnormal male semen, some of which are listed below:

  • Low sperm count
Some men have a very low sperm count, or in some cases, sperm count is zero.
  • Low sperm mobility
In this, the sperm has difficulty in making its way to the egg.
  • Abnormal sperm
In some cases, sperm has an abnormal shape which makes it difficult to fertilize the egg.

Infertility testing

  • The Doctor may conduct a physical examination or advice further tests.
  • After a physical examination, you may be referred to a specialist infertility team or look for a fertility clinic for some further tests and procedures.
  • For women, there are a number of tests which help in ruling out the cause for infertility like tests for Progesterone, Hormones, and Thyroid.
  • Other tests, including X-ray or Transvaginal – Ultra Sono Graphy can detect any blockage of the fallopian tubes or problems around the cervix.
  • For men, Test like semen analysis can be organized.
