STRENGTHENING BOND WITH YOUR CHILD THROUGH THE MEDIUM OF MUSIC

Strengthening bond with your child through the medium of Music #CasioMini

As a parent, we always want to have a great bonding with our kids. However, this is something that is easier said than done. You need to choose the right channels in order to build rapport with your child and Music is something that can help you achieve the same.

You can dance along with your kids on simple musical tunes like ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’, etc. and observe their reaction. You can alternately sing and leave some stanzas for your child. This action would result in playful learning and something that your child would enjoy a lot.

Babies who move rhythmically to music smile more, are easier to soothe and are more willing to explore their environment than babies who simply listen.

As per Laurel Trainor, Ph.D., director of the McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind, in Hamilton, Ontario –

Music not only entertains us, but it also acts as a stress buster. Whether you are happy or sad music is always there to cheer you up. An increase in verbal ability and general reasoning skill is noticed in children when they are introduced to music during the early years.

Bonding with your Child over Music

Music has a profound impact on your child’s cognitive skills and physical abilities. Research has shown that kids undergoing musical training show better performance in the area of fine motor skills, auditory discrimination etc.

Musical activities improve communicative and social development in children. Studies have shown that it increases the emotion perception and recognition.

All babies are born with the potential to become musical and they respond to musical tunes even when they are in their mother’s womb. As per Daniel Levitin, Ph.D., author of This Is Your Brain on Music – A child’s brain is prewired to learn music, just as it’s prewired to learn the language. Your baby may make up little songs and train himself to hear and create various musical ideas. Singing to him, or patting his back or rocking to music, can help strengthen the musical pathways in his brain.

How I bonded with my little brother over the Keyboard

In today’s times where families are becoming nuclear and there are so many interruptions in our lives e.g. mobile phones, tablet, laptop, TV, etc., many times, we do not take enough effort to bond with our child. As parents, we want to share the most beautiful relation with our child but sometimes we take the wrong route.

Like many other modern parents, I also handed my mobile phone to my little brother when he became cranky and the phone helped to divert her attention. He enjoyed watching cartoon videos on YouTube and at times, he would also groove to the music.

We committed a mistake by exposing him to mobile phones, but in that process, we found that he was interested in music. I realized that Music can be used as a medium to channelize his creative instincts and slowly & steadily we kept him away from the phone (especially when he was cranky).

I used to sing nursery rhymes for him and he could follow the wordings. He even tapped his feet to the rhymes. That is when I decided that we need to bring a musical instrument in my house that can strengthen the bond with my little brother.

I bought many musical instruments and saw my brother’s reaction to the music played on them. Out of all the instruments we brought, he liked the piano the most. One of the reasons was that I know how to play the keyboard/piano and hence, I could play some amazing rhymes for her on the keyboard.

My brother also liked keeping her tiny fingers on the keyboard and loved the sound of different chords being played from the keyboard. After seeing his enthusiasm, I decided to teach him music on the Casio Mini Keyboard.

The Casio, SA-47 Mini keyboard has 32 Mini size keys, 100 tones, 10 Song Bank Tunes, and 50 rhymes. The major advantage of having the Keyboard was that I spent very less time on the phone and used the Keyboard as a medium to build an amazing bond with my brother.

We would take turns in playing the keyboard so that my brother could learn as well as a groove to the music at the same time. It was a playful style of learning where we kept all the worldly pleasures away from us and only focused on the music.

The good part is that now even my brother does not like the mobile phone and he tells us to play music on the keyboard when he feels like dancing. The other positive result of this is that he became more attentive and confident. I share an amazing bond with my brother & that was possible all because of the ‘Musical Keyboard’.
