What is Nipah Virus (NiV)? Symptoms, Prevention and Cure #nipahvirus

Kerala is at high risk with the recent virus attack that took 12 lives. 20 people are still infected and put in isolation. It’s reported that three people of a family are found a death due to the intake of infected mangoes bitten by fruit bats.

Things get worse when a Nurse Lini Puthussery, who also died while taking care of NiV patients. The investigations are still going on to rule out the real source. With hundreds of half-informed messages being circulated over social media, it’s not easy to make a common opinion about Nipah virus. This post is about clearing some facts and figures about Nipah virus.

What is Nipah Virus (NiV)?

According to WHO, Nipah virus (NiV) is severe infection occurs in both animals and humans. The natural hosts are  fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family

How Nipah Virus (NiV) Spread?

Infected fruit bats shed virus in their excretion and secretion such as saliva, urine, semen, and excreta. It’s also spread by infected pigs with direct contact. In Malaysia (1999) Nipah Virus (NiV) is spread by consumption of fresh date palm sap contaminated by fruit bats.

Sign and symptoms of Nipah Virus (NiV)

According to experts, Nipah Virus is an airborne disease and spread via direct contact with the contaminated bodies.

It’s the inflammation of brain which started of with common sign and symptoms of a headache, fever, nausea, dizziness etc. These symptoms further involved acute respiratory, pulmonary and neurological signs. If left untreated can lead to coma within 24-48 hours.

The symptoms usually appear from 4 to 10 days after being infected. These symptoms often confused with viral symptoms and are ignored.

Prevention and Cure from Nipah Virus (NiV)

According to WHO, there is no vaccine for the Nipah Virus (NiV). The main treatment is “intensive supportive care“. Strictly stay away from infected fruits by bats during this period. Awareness should be created among locals about symptoms and transmission. Avoiding visiting the epidemic regions during this period and the people should avoid direct contact with human, bats, and pigs. If you or people around notice any uneasiness, get yourself tested.

  2. This sounds really dangerous if it leads to coma in 24to 48 hours. The symptoms seem. Like regular flu too.

  3. Airborne diseases are too dangerous for humans. We need to prevent ourselves and make precautions accordingly.
