Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy are very common. In most of the cases, it’s mild and sometimes it’s severe. It varies with pregnancy and a lot of myths is associated with nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

When does nausea and vomiting of pregnancy start?

This mostly occurs in the first trimester of pregnancy that’s before the 9th week. This can occur at any time of the day or night. The symptoms last for 15 days to months and vary from woman to woman.

Do these symptoms are harmful to the fetus?

According to research, It occurs in about 70% to 85% of pregnant women.

Mild nausea and vomiting during pregnancy are not harmful to the fetus, as well as women health.

What is the difference between mild and severe nausea and vomiting of pregnancy?

The symptoms like nausea and vomiting during pregnancy collectively called as morning sickness. It’s common and mild.

If the symptoms of nausea and vomiting are severe, It’s known as hyperemesis gravidarum. It can eventually lead to dehydration, weight loss, and electrolyte disturbance.

In morning sickness, vomiting is not severe, doesn’t cause severe dehydration and subside quickly.

In hyperemesis gravidarum, vomiting is severe, cause severe dehydration and doesn’t subside quickly.

What causes morning sickness?

The actual cause of these symptoms is unknown. It’s believed to occurs because of the rise in pregnancy hormones, such as human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) or estrogen.

What are the treatments for morning sickness?

The symptoms of morning sickness are easily treatable. Though it’s mostly observed that pregnant woman try to treat medications without consulting the doctor.

It should be clear the medications during pregnancy are not general medicine and used as per the safety standards of pregnant woman and fetus.

Mild treatment is controlled with changes in lifestyle and diet. Severe cases sometimes need hospitalization.

Medical treatment for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy?

If symptoms don’t subside with diet and lifestyle changes medical treatment may be needed. Your doctor may prescribe you the following medications.

  • Vitamin B6 and doxylamine
  • “Antiemetic” drugs

Hospitalization is a need in case of uncontrolled symptoms. It involves fluid replacement to recover dehydration as well as vitamins.
