How Can A PC Help Your Child Learn Dell Anti Rote Day

“Why have you not attempted this question in the exams?” I firmly asked my little brother who’s in the 4th standard. “Sis I learned it by hard, but wasn’t able to recall it.”, he replied.

I still remember, when I didn’t get full marks for writing line by line, the same definitions or answers in school. My little mind was not able to rule out when the answer with same meanings didn’t deserve full marks.

But I didn’t change my learning pattern, As I firmly believed that it’s better to understand the concept than just following rote learning methods.

This is not the story of me or my brother. You can easily find every second student struggling with the concept of memorizing everything by heart. The bad thing is that not much has changed in the last 20 years.

According to Misha Ketchell, “When I have asked Asian students “what do you think?” they replied “tell us what you think and we will think the same”

As a result, the student will never understand things on their own hence making education in India look mediocre.

What is Rote Learning & Its Disadvantages?

Rote learning is passive learning which includes memorization by repetition without understanding the meaning of the information. This includes alphabets, tables, numbers, etc. This concept is introduced in Asian schools during primary classes.

It’s a faster way to remember information but students find it difficult to focus and hence leads to exhaustion. This leaves cognitive skills such as logical and critical thinking undeveloped.

Rote learning is deeply rooted in the Indian education structure. It’s one of the biggest hurdles in the Indian Education System, hindering the development of cognitive skills in a child.

According to the survey of the Annual Status of Education (ASER), “Only 40% of teenagers can calculate the price of an item available at a 10% discount.”

You can imagine what happens when the discount rates vary. The condition of private schools is not much different. This concept of learning is eating away the future of India’s 250 million school-going children.

Today’s graduates have mostly learned through rote learning which makes it very difficult for them to cope up with the demands of modern-day workplaces.

According to a study, less than 25 percent of engineering graduates are employed.

But how does rote learning persists? The focus is always on clearing exams by memorizing everything in the textbooks and to reach higher levels.

According to an NCERT study on primary school teaching, “Only 14 percent of Indian classrooms use teaching materials”

The neck-to-neck concept of scoring better than others has automatically shifted towards rote learning. In this process, cognitive development, practical exposure, and sharpening skills are missed out.

The drawbacks are loud and clear which make teachers and parents look for new teaching strategies.

The Benefits of Computer Use in School

PC-enabled learning is an active and immersive way of learning where students understand the information Instead of merely reading and memorizing.

This brings long-term understanding which helps students use existing information for solving problems. The concept is engaging and sharpens the cognitive skills of students. This includes virtual field trips, quizzes, videos, presentations and so on.

  1. It acts as a virtual library where students can find all the information that they need.
  2. Students can keep track of their assignments, spreadsheets, presentations, etc.
  3. This equips students with technical skills and helps them in developing entrepreneurial skills.
  4. It helps in making learning more interesting.
  5. The teacher gets ample time to focus on each student equally and the proper methods of explanation make learning more effective.

The use of technology widens the reach of a student’s understanding. On this Dell Anti Rote Day, switching to PC-enabled learning is imperative for the future of the country.

Dell Anti Rote Day is being celebrated 10th June every year by Dell Aarambh – A PC-For-Learning Initiative.

According to them, less than 10% of students have PC access in India. Their aim is to equip teachers and parents all over India by providing training in schools.

It’s the responsibility of educational institutes, teachers & parents to switch to computer learning that can help children in the process of earning knowledge.

The use of technology in a school will help in eradicating the rote learning as well as encourages practical teaching.

  15. I remember when I was in 11th grade, during one of our physics class I was not able to understand the concept of something which the teacher was explaining. I tried questioning but that theory was not helping me, my friend sitting beside me told me to mug it up. I kept mum. 45. Recalling at the time of exams is something at which I have faced difficulty as well. And through computer we can learn by visual effects and we can recall it at the time of exams.

  46. I agree with you that most of us in India are rote learners. We do not like to apply our minds. We simply want to copy what someone else has done. It is a mindset issue. Even in our research, we do reverse engineering better than actual innovation that is first in class. Reverse engineering also needs thinking but first in class innovation needs thinking plus risk taking capacity. When I was doing my graduate studies, I was asked to write term papers. Many of us who were from India were used to the concept, in those days, to look up material from literature, synthesise ideas and put it on paper. We were used to reading notes dictated to us. These days, I see my daughter looking for answer using computer. While computers may certainly help in school. At the end of the day how we use computers and how we ask questions will depend on what answers we get.

  47. I agree that there should not be Rote learning but is a PC the only way to learn? Wont the kids be having too much screen time which could be detrimental to their health? #wordsmithkaurreads #MyFriendAlexa #BlogChatter

  50. Whether we like it or not, our kids will end up doing majority of their learning and assessments on PC. I personally am pro the idea, as one needs to move with the time and be technologically comfortable.

  51. In my daughter’s school they do charge a computer fee but unfortunately the smart classes are not properly organized. It is imperative to make sure that children learn things by understanding.

  52. Rote learning can give temporary results but if we want our kids to understand the concept and be clear about it then they should be given an environment where they learnt to ask questions, use their critical thinking logical skills. Good to know about this brad which is working in this direction.

  53. Samay badal gya hai , bahut development hua hai , technology bahut important role play kar rahi hai bachon ki education me , but still kahin na kahin the real education is missing . Zyada technology or google ke kaaran bachon ki creativity khatam ho rahi hai ….

  54. Actually, I started with a desktop when I was in seven standard and used to do all my school projects in desktop which made it more interesting for me.

  55. This is such an important post for the current times. Understanding something and learning something are two very different things.

  56. Agreed

And also if we have computer and technology at our time than we didn’t use like we think we could

    It’s habit you know

  57. Unfortunately, rote learning is the truth in Indian educational institutions..hopefully, it will change with the introduction of computers in school…

  58. Yes, learning has to become student-led and computers are an important tool towards the shift. Informative post, Bushra! Thanks for sharing!
