Dreams: Are they the prerogative of just the young?

Life is full of ups and downs, but the power to handle those lies within us. Our culture has always been one of support, with large families where parents look after the kids and the roles change when they grow up.

In most cases, it’s difficult for parents to focus on their dreams while making a living and working their way up the career ladder. They strive to ensure that we get all we want and put their own dreams on hold.

That being said, things are changing in the 21st century. It seems like there’s been an upheaval in people’s mindsets; reaching 50 does not diminish our capacity to do or achieve anything.

To illustrate – a few years ago, my dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease; fulfill our lives were shattered. It deeply impacted me as I was reminded of all the sacrifices he made to fulfill my life’s dreams while giving up his own.

The thought of him being inhibited by this disease was hard to bear. Being a doctor myself, I know and understand the consequences that come with the disease.

But, that’s what we do; as children, we tend to underestimate our elders. We believe that we can only truly ‘live’ in our youth, with the energy to forge ahead to fulfill our dreams.

I’m so glad my father proved that theory wrong. Despite his progressive disease, my father chose to continue his work with the determination that I can only consider to come from superhero willpower.

While his dreams may include much more than just providing for his family, to him, the golden rule of life is to just #livenonstop.

He believes his work is important and his age and disease are just minor obstacles to overcome. Though his energy levels may have lessened a little, he never lets it overcome his willpower as he ensures the continuity of his various activities. He’s my inspiration.

I once read a quote from American businesswoman Mary Kay Ash – “When you reach an obstacle, turn it into an opportunity. You have a choice. You can overcome and be a winner, or you can allow it to overcome you and be a loser. The choice is yours and yours alone. Refuse to throw in the towel. Go that extra mile that failures refuse to travel. It is far better to be exhausted from success than to be rested from failure.” Seeing my father live this has inspired me.

We presume that our parents and elders are simply looking to make our dreams come true and that it’s our prerogative as children, to achieve them. It’s about time we ensure that these archaic notions are done away with.

The world doesn’t just belong to the current generation; it belongs to all living in it. So #livenonstop, make the best of what’s available and you’ll find that it makes it a lot easier to pursue your dreams.

Whether it’s to continue doing what you’re doing as best you can or to take on a new adventure, age is just a number and for my dad, it’s just one more minor hurdle to clear.

While he’s dealing with this condition positively, I ensure that I’m there, every step of the way for moral support; he doesn’t seem to need anything else.

For more inspirational stories about people who don’t let their age stop them from living life to the fullest. The stories are sure to motivate you or help you motivate your elders to #livenonstop.

  1. Your father is truly an inspiration, Allahumma baarik! May he be blessed with the best. May we all be blessed with good health and the appreciation for it as well, and in the face of adversity and difficulty, may we muster up the strength to keep moving on.

  2. A good post indeed! It’s hard, but I think if we all turn our obstacles into opportunities life would be much more happy!

  3. Thanks for the post. It is truly inspiring to read real stories…..I hope your dads zeal and enthusiasm spread and drives more people toward the path or ‘doing’ rather than ‘lazing’…I am in my late twenties and already feel too old to do anything for myself….Thanks for this post 🙂 I can feel a hint of positivity…
