Causes of Severe Period Cramps

For some women, the onset of their menstrual cycle can be a life-changing event. It could mean dealing with severe cramps in and around the lower abdomen area. The pain can even radiate to the back and thighs.

While some women experience intense throbbing pain, for others it a constant dull ache that is experienced throughout the cycle. Allied symptoms may include nausea, loose motions, headaches, and dizziness.

The Best Gynaecologist in Bangalore can advise simple lifestyle changes for some relief from the discomfort. In some cases, the pain may signal a prevailing health condition.

We look at some of the most common causes of period-related cramps.

What Causes Cramping During Periods?

During menstrual bleeding, the uterus contracts for the expulsion of the tissue linings. These contractions are triggered by prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances that cause pain and inflammation.

In cases of higher levels of prostaglandins, the menstrual cramps are more severe. Also, when the contractions are sharp, it may constrict the blood vessels that feed the uterus. This can cause some degree of pain.

Addition, here are some conditions that can result in period pains:

Cervical stenosis: In some cases, women may have an extremely narrow cervical aperture. This can restrict menstrual flow and cause an increase in pressure around the aperture, resulting in pain inside the uterus.

Endometriosis: This is a painful condition where the tissue lining of the uterus becomes implanted on the outside of the uterus, typically on the ovaries and the fallopian tubes or even in the pelvic area. When these tissues dislodge, you experience pain.

Fibroids: Fibroids are noncancerous growths found implanted on the uterine walls and can cause severe pain.

Adenomyosis: This is a condition wherein the tissues that line the uterus begin growing into the uterine walls.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): This is an infection occurs in the female reproductive organs by sexually transmitted bacteria.

Are You Prone to Severe Menstrual Cramps?

Some of the best gynecologists in Bangalore say that older women become more prone to severe menstrual cramping.

Moreover, women who have never given birth or are chain smokers may experience severe pain. Some women may experience exceptionally heavy bleeding or irregular menstrual cycle.

In all such cases, it’s best to consult a doctor and undergo investigative tests to ensure the right treatment is given to reduce discomfort and help you lead a normal life even during your periods.
