I’m in the state of shock when on my breastfeeding awareness post at social media received some weird reaction.

According to her, “I’ve never breastfed and I have brought up 3 very healthy and very intelligent children who are rarely ill”

I’m not saying that breastfeeding is easy neither it comes naturally to everyone. It’s also not about beautiful snuggles and cuddles. It may be tiring and leads to exhaustion.

At this time woman needs vision and support from family and friends. Also, lots of tales and myths prevail that pass from generation to generation.

You will start getting lot’s of advice and opinion once the people around you know that you are breastfeeding. Though good tips are helpful, all the information is not always right.

Whether you’ve breastfed your babies before, or you’re getting ready to do so, I am discussing here some Myths and Misconceptions about Breastfeeding that will help you understand the facts about breastfeeding.

Busted: Breastfeeding Myths

A lot of tales get passed from one woman to the next about breastfeeding and creates negative perceptions about it. Hence there is a need to clear doubts about these myths.

Are Breastfeeding Myths True?

No, Breastfeeding Myths are not true. But as There are so many myths surrounding breastfeeding that it can be hard for women to know what’s true and what’s no.

Things you should know about Breast milk

Breastfeeding is the gold standard for infant feeding. A woman who is exclusively breastfeeding, the contraceptive protection is about 98% up to 6 months postpartum. Thus, lactation provides a natural method of contraception.

When you hold your baby in the delivery room you can let your newborn latch on to your breast and start breastfeeding. It can be a pleasant experience to mother and newborn if start at the right time.

It’s recommended that you should ideally start nursing your newborn whenever you notice your baby showing signs of hunger, like when your baby is trying to mouth your nipple.

Breast milk is the primary source of nutrition in the first year and supplement during the weaning period. Hence, breast milk will boost the baby immune system as long as it’s fed.

Fact: I’ve come across many mothers who just after few months of the previous delivery. So, there is no guarantee of protection from birth control.

If a woman is on exclusively breastfeeding, the contraceptive protection is about 98% till 6 months post delivery. Though you can easily get pregnant as soon as your menstrual cycle starts.

Breastfeeding Myths: One should not Breastfeed if the baby has diarrhea or vomiting

Fact: The best treatment for a baby’s digestive infection is breastfeeding. It’s is the best fluid you can give your baby when they have diarrhea or vomiting. At the same time discontinue any other form of liquids or solid foods during that period.

Breastfeeding Myths: If you are sick you shouldn’t breastfeed

Fact: Breastfeeding prevents baby from catching an infection from the mother. It’s the protection against any strains, so you should continue breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding Myths: You shouldn’t breastfeed if you’re taking medicine

Fact: Some Medications are safe to take while some may not be safe. It’s observed that some part of the medicine may appear in your breast milk and it doesn’t harm your baby. So If you are taking medicine which is truly of some concern, then talk to your doctor.

Breastfeeding Myths: Milk Formulas Powder provide the same nutrition as Breast Milk

Fact: Breast milk is the Best food you can give to your baby! Nothing can replace that. The claims that Milk formulas powder provide the same nutrition as breast milk are incorrect. Formulas are made as per general needs of baby whereas your own breast milk adapts specifically as per your baby’s unique needs.

Breastfeeding Myths: Small Breasts don’t have enough milk

Fact: This is not true. The size of the breast doesn’t relate to milk production. In fact, it’s possible that women with smaller breasts have enough milk supply!

Breastfeeding Myths: Babies need nursing frequently

Fact: Babies need to be breastfed on demand. They need to nursing often, sometimes every 2 hours or even less. Babies have tiny stomachs so they suck a little milk every time and the breast milk digested quickly hence they need nursing frequently.

Breastfeeding Myths: There is No Breast Milk in the First Few Days

Fact: You will have thick colostrum containing essentials nutrients, antibodies, and immunoglobulins on the very first day. It is very important for your baby. Once your baby starts sucking, you will have enough milk supply in a couple of days.

Breastfeeding Myths: Breastfeeding is painful and it’s normal

Fact: No, it’s not true. Tenderness is common in the first few days and it does disappear. Components of breast milk help to heal breast nipples naturally.

If the nipple pain does not subside then it should not be ignored, you must see a specialist.

Breastfeeding Myths: Breastfeeding mothers should eat food carefully

Fact: Everything in moderation is fine until your baby stomach is healthy. If a baby can be fussy to feed on the breast or also feel gassy after a particular food, is notice.

Avoid that particular food for a few days to ascertain which food could be the real cause. A breastfeeding mother should eat a balanced diet, but there is absolutely no need to unnecessarily limit your diet or avoid certain foods.

Breastfeeding is natural, but in today’s world, it’s not so easy. Factors like lack of proper information about breastfeeding as well as liberal values, fear to lose the body figure, Mothers are not breastfeeding their babies.

At the end of the day, it’s woman choice and if the mother doesn’t want to breastfeed it doesn’t make them any less of a woman or a mother. Let’s always encourage all mommies to make their own decisions and stand tall and proud in their decision. generation to generation.

Breastfeeding is very important because it’s the best start for your baby. Follow your maternal instincts and try to fulfill your baby’s nutrition needs!

  6. Great article! My baby days are long gone but I breastfed both my babies until they went to a cup. My granddaughter has a 7 month old and she could only breastfeed about 3 months but I’m so glad she was able to have that bonding.
